I'm not sure how I missed your reply before.I guess I haven't been to active in the genealogy world lately.
Yes, my family name Forwald was Anglicized from the original Vorwald.Bernhard Joseph Vorwald came to Iowa City with his brother Francis. Francis's descendants in Dubuque still spell their name Vorwald.
I have a Fredrich Longvelt Vorwald in family tree. Bernhard Joseph and wife Mary Schroeder had a son named Fredrich Longvelt Vorwald, born about 1837 Cincinatti, Ohio. Mary died in Hamilton, OH in 1841. He died about 1869 in Iowa.Fredrich was listed as "idiotic" and "insane" on the census in Iowa. Here are notes from the probate...
Johnson County Probate, August 24, 1868, Pg. 29.Fred Forwald - Insane. And now on this day to wit August 24th, 1865 comes Mary Forwald of Johnson County, State of Iowa and complains that her son Frederick Forwald is insane and needs care and attention at the expense of said county.Whereupon, information files and warrant issued first and warrant returned the same day by John Wilson, Sheriff with body.Whereupon, on hearing the testimony in the case and the certificate of examination of J. H. Muncey M.D. It is decided by the court that said Frederick Forwald is Insane, and needs care and attention at the expense of said county, he being in indigentcircumstances and no means of support. It therefore ordered by the court that said Frederick Forwald be committed to the Iowa State Lunatic Asylum for the Insane at Mt Pleasant, there to remain at the expense of said Johnson County until legally discharged, and that the costs herein be taxed to the county of Johnson.Warrant of committal cut and certificate to the superintendent of the hospital were made out and delivered to John Wilson, Sheriff of said county who delivered said person to the hospital, and filed receipt of Superintendent, according to law.Fees compensated $5.00.
