Emigration from County Galway
The period of the Great Famine (1845 -1851) was a time of particularly high emigration from this area. The chief destinations of West Galway emigrants were the U.S. cities of Boston, New York, Philadelphia. Others settled in New Brunswick, Canada and in New Zealand and Australia. There was also much seasonal migration from this area to the north of England and Scotland and many West Galway people settled there too.
The Great Famine dramatically altered and accelerated the rate and pattern of Galway emigration. Many thousands perished at that time. Such comments in church records as '400 people from this parish died from Famine' bear testimony to this.
The Chief Towns of Co Galway
The main towns in West Galway are Galway City, Tuam, Clifden, Oughterard, Athenry and Kinvara. The Galway Silkes were mainly distributed in the east of the county. The official records (Births, Marriages and Deaths) date from 1860; the distribution of births across the east of the County can be imagined. The deaths for the same period show a similar pattern. A good map of the County showing many of these places is at http://www.local.ie/general/map/galway.shtmlhttp://www.local.ie/general/map/galway.shtml.

From looking at the map and the towns, it is apparent that the Silkes were distributed over most of east Galway.I have all the Births, marriages and deaths from the offical records on a data base: these relate to the period 1860 - 1900.However for most people the relevant records that require to be accessed are the parish records, that give data on baptisms, marriages and perhaps deaths. These will be for the period from 1780 onwards. There is access to the Galway parish register lists from the same site; it provides the dates of the records for each parish.I understand that many of these are now accessible to computerised search and it many be possible to do a general search for all Silkes from all sources on the database for the early part of the nineteenth century.
