Bertie, Duplin & Wayne County NC Simmons family
My known Simmons progenitor is George Washington ("G.W.") Simmons (ca. 1820-ca. 1919), a free person of color who settled (and died) in Wayne County, NC. I am 100% certain that he is NOT the George Washington Simmons that married Hester Kornegay of Duplin County: my gg-grandfather G.W. married Axey Jane Manuel (11 Jun 1823-11 Jul 1885) of Sampson County, NC. I'm seeking to confirm that G.W.'s father and mother were James Simmons (ca. 1798-ca. 1860) and Winnie Medline (b.?-ca. 1902), respectively. I believe that this Simmons branch might have descended from Margaret Simmons / Simmonds (b ca. 1700 in VA) and includes Rachel Simmons (b Oct 1717 in King George County, VA), Phereby Simmons (b ca. 1772-?) of Bertie County, Sarah Simmons (ca. 1755-ca. 1820) of Bertie and Duplin Counties, and William Simmons (ca. 1732-bef 1766) of Bertie County. I am also trying to ascertain the parents of G.W.'s wife, Axey Jane Manuel.I have traced much of these Simmons and Manuel branches forward to the present day and will be happy to share the info I have. Thanks!!...
