I am researching a family of Simonds/Simons/Simmons that are first found in Winn Parish, Louisiana in an area originally called Goodwater. This area is now only defined as the far Northeast corner of Winn Parish - right along the Jackson Parish border. This area was extremely fertile farmland.
I have extended my research to Jackson Parish as my ancestor, Thomas A. Simons was an early landowner in Winn Parish and on the land patent his name is spelled SIMONDS. The only other SIMONDS I was able to find are in Jackson Parish and there are quite a few of them that later go on to spell their name SIMONS like my ancestor.
Per the 1860 Winn Parish census (and due to 3 courthouse fires)the only information I have been able to collect: Thomas A. Simons was from AL. His wife, Eliza Jane Scarborough was from MS.
The family appears in 1870 without Thomas A. Simons in Claiborne Parish. At that time the name is spelled SIMMONS. It was very fortunate that we had the names of the children written down and passed down otherwise we never would have made the connection.
If there is anyone that is working on Simonds/Simons/Simmons in these areas, please let me know.
