"Dead Man's Cave" Mystery
Hi there,
A fellow Sines tracker recently came across a webpage about a cave in Garrett Co. MD called "Dead Man's Cave" at this site:
http://www.mgs.md.gov/esic/features/cave/dman.htmlhttp://www.mgs.md.gov/esic/features/cave/dman.html
.
"....The cave takes its name from a legend connected with its history. The legend has it that a family named Sines, in which there were two brothers, lived in the area in the 1860's. One of them was reportedly retarded and was murdered by the other, who buried his body in the cave which was subsequently filled up....." (quote)
.
Does anyone know who these Sines brothers were?
Does anyone have a Sines brother that seems to have gone missing in that region during the 1860s?
.
We have one possibility.
Isaac Sines, s/o of Major Henry Sines & Louise Clara Wolfe, b: abt. 1814.
Family tradition claimed that Isaac & his brother Jacob went off to Ohio in the 1860s where they settled, married and lived out their lives, apparently with no future contact with their relatives back in Preston Co. WV and Garrett Co. MD.
.
Research, however, shows the two brothers actually left for Ohio in the late 1820s where assorted relatives were living. Brother Jacob married his 1st cousin in Muskingum Co. Ohio in 1828 and in the 1830s he moved to Mason Co. WV with his wife, children and various family members. Jacob lived out his life, died & was buried in Mason Co.
.
Meanwhile, brother Isaac never married or settled. He seemed to just move about, living with one relative after another.
Stories about Isaac (in a book on this Sines branch) tend to suggest that Isaac may have been some what retarded and prone to getting in trouble.
In 1850 he was found living in the household of relatives in Muskingum Co. Ohio
In 1860 he was living with relatives in Preston Co. WV near Garrett Co. where he also had several other brothers living that he stayed with from time to time.
I did find an Isaac Sines listed as serving with the Union Army in the 62nd Regiment, Ohio Infantry but don't know if this was the Isaac in question.
Does anyone know where this Regiment might have formed or drawn it's men from?
I have not found Isaac in the 1870 census.
.
Does anyone know what became of this Isaac Sines after the 1860 census?
Bye for now,
Kathleen
