Sipes Surname Origin
I have been researching my maternal line for years and helped co-author a book on genealogy. My Sipes line became very important to me when my grandpa Sipes passed away. He was a politician and was instrutmental in Bill Clinton's early campaign/career, he helped develop the town of Rison, serving as County Judge from 1971-1985 and then Mayor up until his death in 2004.
He was a very gruff and stern person. The Sipes also had a look about them that was Eastern European; well my line at least. So I began really digging on the web and about 4 years ago, I found an article published by a University in Germany on the Sipes/Sipe/Seib surname.
It was found that this surname means "a small spring" in the Dutch language. In the article it spoke of how archaic the name is and it has been traced back to the Franconian War, Hungary (there is a region in Hungary called "Sipos") and in later times even mentioned as "sahip" in India. It is an old name and we should all be proud to carry that name.
My ancestors immigrated to Pennsylvania and became Pennsylvania Dutch; they were from the Palantine/Pfalz region in Southwesetern Germany near the border of Nancy, France and Saarland. After landing in PA, they migrated to Maryland where they farmed the "St. Elizabeth", then down to Conover, NOrth Carolina, over to Bethel, Tennessee and down to Arkansas.
I have a pretty vast knowledge on the Sipes line and if I can be of any help to anyone please let me know.
Susan
