Hi Karen--
My maternal grandparents were both Swedish. My Mom spoke Swedish with her parents and I studied Swedish at the U of M and taught Swedish at Cambridge Community College in MN.
When my Mom started dating my Dad (a Siren), my grandmother jokingly called him, "Mr. Lilac Bush."
On our first trip to Sweden, we saw the name "Siren" on tombstones in a couple of cemeteries. Our Swedish guides told us the name referred to lilacs.
The "i" and the "y" have often been interchanged by people who weren't so very educated. In fact, our name has been written "Searann"--by people who just went by the sound.
I wonder if there is a connection between the Finnish Sirens and those from Luxembourg.
