Bathurst Skelton and Thomas Jefferson were students together at the College of William and Mary. They both vied for the hand of the lovely Martha Wayles. (The fact that her father, John Wayles, was very well off, I'm sure, made Martha all the more appealing.) Skelton won and he and Martha were wed on 20 Nov. 1766. On 07 Nov. of the following year, they had a son, John Skelton. Unfortunately, Bathurst died a year later, on 30 Sep. 1768. Jefferson then moved in and began courting the beautiful widow. He also was making plans to adopt her son, John Skelton, but unfortunately young John died in June 1771. The following New Year's Day, Thomas Jefferson and the Widow Martha (née Wayles) Skelton were wed.... and the rest is history.
