I am writing the first book from the American point of view about 19th century rotunda panoramas. These were the biggest paintings in the world, 50 x 400=20,000 square feet, housed in their own rotundas which were 16-sided polygons.Chicago in 1893 had 6 panorama companies and 6 panorama rotundas. At hand is an article from CHICAGO SUNDAY TRIBUNE,December 17,1871,p.7--"Skiff & Co's great panorama of the CHICAGO FIRE,the work of Frank D.Skiff, the well known artist,is about to start on a tour through Indiana and Ohio. The panorama is highly commended as a work of art by those who have seen it,showing, as it does, most vividly, the scenes of the great fire, and giving also a large number of sketches in the ruins. The establishment starts for the first time, all other affairs under the name of Skiff's Panorama having been cheap humbugs."I have much info to share.
