Hi, Dick;
I'm assuming then that you are the Dick Williams I grew up with (son of "Chalky", brother of Donna and David, grandson of the Johnsons and unofficially shoestring "might as well be kin" via my aunt Alice Skillicorn Freiermuth.
Thanks for responding. 1st USMC Lt. Donald K. Skillicorn was my 1st cousin, from Morgan Hill. He was the only one in the family lost during the war. His plane crashed and his crew saw him make it to shore one one of the islands, but they couldn't get to him. The last thing anyone saw of Don was him standing on the shore waving that he was OK.
Both of Don's parents died several years ago, but I'll ask Aunt Alice and Fr. Harry Freiermuth if they have any information. I was only about 6 the last time I saw Don, so all I remember is that he was tall (especially to a 6-years old) and impressive in his Marine Corps dress uniform.
It's interesting that you are doing aircraft archeology. A friend of mine got involved in that because his wife's uncle died in the war as pilot of a bomber or cargo plane which crashed on the Isle of Man, where my grandfather was born. The friend taught history at Cabrillo College and has written several books on such subjects as the history of the Chinese and the Japanese in the Monterey Bay Area.He went to the Isle of Man and helped dedicate a memorial to those airmen who lost their lives stationed there.
Stay in touch. I used to ask about you every now and then when I saw David, but now that he's left the area, your message was the first contact I've had with any of you for the past few years.
Regards,
Dale Skillicorn
