Marc,

I've heard various theories about the name. Such as, Scandinavian origin, German origin. The strongest of the theories is that it is Cornish (I.E. from Cornwall here in England) deriving from either SKUES or SKEWIS, which is very common in that area.
There was a John De SKUES (or something like that) back in the 1500's given a title by a King (if you wnat more, I'll look it up), and it seems to come from there.
