Dr. James Slater and son John Slater
Have hit a brickwall on my husband's line. My husband was William A. Slater, b. 20 Dec 1918.
His father was Howard Walter Slater, b. 5 Oct 1885 in Stamford, CT; married Josie Augusta Guion DeVeau in 1913 and d. 4 Aug 1940.
Howard's father was Charles Merwin Slater. He was b. 13 Sept 1852. Married Fanny Scofield Betts in 1874 and d. 23 Jan 1915.
Charles father was also Charles Merwin Slater. He was b 9 Sept 1813 in Portchester, N.Y. He died 5 May 1898. He married Elizabeth Dan(n).
In the Commemorative Biographical Record of Fairfield County, honoring the son of the elder Charles Merwin, mention is made of his great-great grandfather (no name) having been one of the settlers of Stamford, CT. He came from England.
The article mentions Dr. James Slater, Charles Merwin's great-grandfather was born in Portchester, N.Y. His son, John, also was born in Portchester and was a blacksmith by occupation. He married Polly Sniffin, a "Quakeress", and they had 11 children of whomthe elder Charles Merwin, the eldest, was the only one now living. He was bound out bound out as a child of 9 for apprenticeship to learn the shoemakers trade, which he followed for some time.
This is my brick wall. I have been unable to locate either Dr. James Slater, John Slater and Polly Sniffin, or the unknown Slater that came from England. Is there anyone on this forum that could be of some help to me? I would greatly appreciate it.
