In my message of 2006 I indicated that the father of "STEPHEN 1 SLATER/SLUYTER" was Stephen but, no, it was Isaac Sluyter (1770-1829; wife Sara Kritsinger). In the 1820 census he is listed as Stephen Sluyter, in 1860 as Stephen Slater, both times in Neversink, Sullivan Co., NY.
His son, Stephen Slater (b. 1844) served in the Civil War (Co. H, 143rd REGT. N.Y.S.V).The history of that regiment indicates the Regt. accompanied Sherman as far as Durham, NC, where they witnessed the surrender of Johnston and the largest Confederate army of that year.
Three other sons, Minard, Israel and Hiram Slater, married three Brundage sisters of Grahamsville.
