There was a Clifton and Ruth Slaton who lived in Crittenden Co KY (county seat Marion). 1902 census ed 54 page 8A. They have no children in that enumeration. Clifton appears in the 1900 census ed 28 page 10 as the grandson of Nannie CONGER. There have been several publications about these lines by the descendants, but it is unclear how many of them can trace back solidly to a progenitor. A Russell Slaton came to the area, supposedly b ca 1798 in SC and buried in Crooked Creek (old), but the stones may not be visible anymore. We were too late to view these stones when we visited. Russell is a mystery to me, although another researcher purports to tell you everything about him, I could not confirm any of the claims this other researcher made. It is likely that Russell came from E TN, there is a census record for a Russell in 1820 Smith co TN. Smith was very large at this time. There is some suspicion that my probably ancestor John Slaton, d 1814 in Greenville SC, may have produced a son Edward who may have in turn produced Russell. Edward mar ca 1796 in the Old Cumberland Settlement (somewhere around Nashville TN). This MAY be the line that this Clifford descends from, but W KY is also full of Slaydens, a few of who may have had their names altered over time.

Maybe this will get you started. I will check my e-Books for this family and see what I turn up.
