James, thank you so much for this information. That is great! My great-grandfather, Herschel Porter Copeland, was the brother of Elizabeth Woodson "Bettie" Copeland Slaughter. My great-uncle, Robert Marion Copeland (son of Herschel Porter, and nephew of Bettie Copeland Slaughter), did a bunch of family history research in the 1970s.I have a copy of his notes listing marriage dates of various family members and these notes show that Bettie married an Edwin Hickman Slaughter on Sep 23, 1867 (just one day off from the date you had).So that is where I got the middle name.I found him listed on the 1850 census as Edwin H. Slaughter.I would be glad to send you directly a copy of my great-uncle's notes if you are interested. Do you know what year Edwin died?
Since my initial posting I did manage to find Bettie again on the Missouri census (and got her Missouri death certificate online).I have only two children for Bettie and Edwin Slaughter, Leah (b. Mar 1870) who I think died young, and Eva E. Slaughter (b. Feb 1874) who married John Braithwaite and had several children. But I think there were some other children that I am missing. (1900 census says Bettie bore 5 children, 2 still living at that time.)I will contact you offline and hope that we can exchange more information about this family.Thank you so much for your response!
