It is clear that in some cases the surname Sloss has been given as an interpretation of other surnames (e.g. Sluijs or Schloss). However, in Scotland (according to Black's Surnames of Scotland) it can be traced back to Auchincloss through variations in pronounciation and spelling from the original Gaelic. I would never rule out any particular origin without evidence to the contrary but I've yet to see convincing evidence for a Sloas/Sluss connection in Scotland coming from elsewhere in Europe. I've read of Slosses in one form or another from Scottish documents from 1500 onwards.
