Missouri officials seek heirs to abandoned military medal
The detective work went on for a year and a half. They searched death certificates, obituaries, local newspapers, the Internet and other sources for clues.
The goal was to reunite a Distinguished Service Cross, found abandoned in a Missouri safe deposit box, with the heirs of the man who earned it.
But officials in the state treasurer's office could find no living relatives of Ernest Warren Slusher, a World War I Army veteran who got the award given for "extraordinary heroism" in combat. Slusher, a doctor and a Missouri native, was lauded for shrugging off injury and ignoring enemy fire to continue treating the wounded during battle.
The Distinguished Service Cross is the second-highest decoration that can be awarded to a U.S. soldier, ranking behind only the Medal of Honor.
"Not being able to return it is frustrating," said Scott Harper, who oversees the state treasurer's unclaimed property division. "We hit a dead end on the family tree."
