Hi David.
Yup - you're right...there is a coat of arms.I have a small copy of one in front of me...trying to describe it wont be easy!!!! 3 strange looking green birds.2 at the top of shield and one at bottom. In the middle is a head of a lion with a long green tongue. All facing left as i'm looking at it. THe birds could be falcons, but look more like parrots to me!!!!(grin). Come to think of it - if I sprayed my african grey with green paint, i would have quite a good likeness to the drawing!!!!!!!!!!!
Writing states:
A location name given to one who came from Smeaton (the Smith's Homestead) and found in Yorkshire and Midlothian.Early records show Johannes Smeton in the 1379 Poll Tax of Yorkshire, and a Henry de Smithetone of Edneburk rendered homage in 1296. 'Arms' from Scotland.16th century.
Has anyone else any comments on the coat of arms subject???
Best wishes.Rozzles
