Melvin Smeland
Melvin Smeland, 82, of Poulsbo died May 27, 2001, in Poulsbo.
He was born Dec. 16, 1918, in Poulsbo to Andy Iverson and Matilda Somerseth. He was adopted and raised by John Smeland. He graduated in 1938 from North Kitsap High School.
He was a staff sergeant in the Army from 1941 to 1945. He was awarded the Philippine Liberation Medal with bronze star and the Victory Medal Asiatic Pacific Service Medal.
He was a commercial fisher for 31 years and also was a supervisor at NTS Keyport.
He enjoyed bowling and traveling and was a long time member of Sons of Norway in Poulsbo.
He attended First Lutheran Church.
Survivors include two sons, Ron of Bremerton and Gary of Poulsbo; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.
