William Hatchell of I. of W. Co., VA apparently sold 100 ac of his land on 3 Jan 1753 to John Smelly and wife Sarah Smelly for 6 pounds and 9 shillings VA currency.The land bordered William Birch, Braceys, Holledays and John Morris.This is part of the land that Morris Hatchell and Conyers Morris sold in 1773 (Morris inheriting the land from his father Wm. Hatchell; Wit:John Morris, Sr., John Morris, Jr. and Daniel B. Batten (Bk. 9, p. 53-55). On 2 Mar 1760, Newport Parish Vestry Book, William Hatikel (Hatchell) appears with others among the lines processioned including George Hall, John Marshall, John Battin, Daniel Battin, Eliza Bressie (Bracy), Daniel Herring, John Morris, Joshua Edwards, Robert Edwards, Arthur Turner, Smelly, Norsworthy.No further info on Smelly.
