SMIDDY -Ireland, England, USA- PA

I am trying to merge family tales with facts to track:
John SMIDDY b abt 1832 Ireland.

He was supposed to be very tall and have red hair so at age 16 he became one of the Queens Guards and he hated it. He supposedly stowed away on a ship to American, leaving his wife & children behind. The familyt came a year later.

He worked in the mines of PA & died in a mining accident ca 1860.

Does this story or details sound familiar?
thanks,
Patti
