James W. SMITH/Mary W. HALL VA-IN

Searching for parents of James W. Smith born in VA about 1800. I have a DAR application that states Mary Hall, his wife, was from Nelson Co. VA. Her date of birth is about 1807. They show up in the Whitley County, IN census in 1840. In the 1850 Whitley Co. IN census Mary Hall Smith is a widow with her children. Somewhere between 1840 and 1850 James W. Smith died. The children in the 1850 census are: Clemenza b. 1829 VA; Pyrence Ann Smith b. 1832 VA; Lucretia b. 1843 VA; Samuel and James born 1831 IN; and John W. b. 1844 IN. Based on the 1840 census there was an older son, but I have no name. I really need help on this. There are no cemetery records or death records for James W. Smith in Whitley Co. There is an 1830 census in Nelson Co. VA with a James Smith on it showing 1 male 30-40; 3 females 30-40 and one female under 5.

Advice on how to obtain marriage records for 1828 time frame, or birth records or any advice would be appreciated.
