"Smythes smittes in a smethy"
So runs the contextual quote from the Oxford English Dictionary, quoting a writer of about 1300 AD.
It's the title of my study of the descent of Peter SMithies, our good friend, here in Sheffield, England.
The Smithies study I did was of the families of Elland in West Yorkshire, and have lots of related material. Not easy to e-mail though.
If people are interested an e-mail and a snail-mail address will get a few pages if relevant. No charge.
The documents are actually in Halifax Library in West Yorkshire and in the Soc of Gen etc., if people can get to either.
If anyone knows anything about the family of Thomas Bywater Smithies, radical 19th century journalist, who was a friend of my Gt Gt grandfather, I'd be delighted to hear from you
