Steve---I got further into my notes and answered my own question. Joseph's father John was a Captain of the 3rd Company of Dorchester County. Militia, inservice as late as 4/1/80. He was also a County. magestrate and represented his districtin the first State Assembly of Maryland.His Mercantile holdings maintained a fleet of ships. He owned 1687 acres, was the largest slave holder in the county and owned several other business in the area.
His will left everything to the children of his first wife. This may help explain why Joseph, of the second wife Elizabeth, may have chosen to go to sea.He most likely had some patronage but little wealth.
