No need to thank me for the information about Benjamin Smoot. Anyone who looks in the marriage records would find the same thing. However, it is still a mystery to me after several years of research who the parents of Thomas H. Smoot are.
In his book "The Smoots of Maryland and Virginia" Harry Wright Newman on pages 89 and 97 thinks that he is the son of Edward Smoot and Susannah Hitch, but on page 190 he lists the family of Thomas H. Smoot as if he does not know who they are.
Based on Fauquier County marriage records, I believe that the Thomas Smoot who married Ann Pilcher is the son of Edward and Susannah Smoot. This Thomas Smoot moved to Missouri, as did Edward's other sons. Newman lists this Thomas Smoot's family on page 195. More information on this family can be found in the 1884 book "History of Marion County, Missouri," by R.I. Holcombe.
Thomas H. Smoot lived out his life in Fauquier County. His obituary, which appeared in the Alexandria Gazette on August 17, 1854, is one of my favorite obituaries:
"Died, Thomas H. Smoot, on the 5th ult., Thomas H. Smoot, of Carters Run, in Fauquier, age 66 years. He was the Isaak Walton of the 'Free State'; his localities will bear his name and the names time out of mind: 'Smoots Hold,' 'Rifle,' and 'Round Top' will be remembered as long as the Tarpeian Rock."
