I have taken a two year break from my research! Once my little ones started school, my focus had to change. They are both starting second grade this fall, so I hope I may have a little more time to do some research.
I believe my line to be through Benjamin Smoot - son of Thomas and Abigail Smoot - but have been unable to find any definitive proof. (I do have my line traced on one side to Benjamin...it's another line I'm trying to trace.) Specifically, I believe our line to be through Benjamin's son, Barton. Benjamin's children married a number of my other relatives and they settled on land bought from my Ellis line.
My direct line is through a man named John Smoot, who I believe to be a son of Barton, though Barton left no mention of him in his will. When Barton died, he left everything to one son - Richard Echols Smoot. He had other sons still living, but they had moved to Alabama by the time of Barton's death. John is not mentioned in anything that I have found, but his birth would fall between the births of Barton's other known children, and I have a theory as to why John may not have been mentioned in Barton's will.
John remained in Henrico and was married to Sarah Blackburn, but living in their home, was Sarah's younger sister, Elizabeth. John had children with BOTH women, and my line atually comes from the line of John Smoot and Elizabeth Blackburn. By 1860, Sarah had moved out of the home with a son and her unmarried daughters, and Elizabeth takes on the last name Smoot - though I don't think they ever got married, as by 1870, she's going by the last name of Blackburn again. I believe that Barton may have "disowned" John - thus not mentioning him in his will - because of his lifestyle. To make matters even a little more confusing...my gg-grandfather was a Union soldier from Maine, who married John and Sarah Smoot's daughter, Sarah, right after the Civil War. They did not have any children and shortly after Sarah's death, he married the daughter of Richard and Elizabeth (Ellis) Smoot - Leonora. Richard Smoot was a son of John Smoot and Elizabeth Blackburn!
Where in Virginia did your Smoots settle?
