Hello Howard & Mark. Martha Jane Smoot was not the child of Amanda Stewart Smoot Byars. It is my understanding and the records seem to prove it, that Martha Jane was either a niece or cousin to Amanda. Check the Williamson Co. Texas (don't remember the year off the top of my hear) and Milam Co. Texas census. Several of the children of Burton Charles/Charles Burton Smoot and his wife are buried in a country cemetery in Milam Co. My grandfather and grandmother, Henry Clay Byars and Sarah "Sally" Emmaline Magill married in Cameron, Milam Co. TX. Henry and Burton Charles were half brothers. My Father was named after Burton Charles. His name was Charles Burton Byars, son of Henry Clay Byars and his first wife Sarah "Sally" Emmaline Magill. Please look at those census and you will see who Martha Jane's mother was. Regards to both.
Clovis Byars Herring
