If this is your father, you should write to the Social Security Administration and get a copy of his original application (form SS-5) for a social security number. The application will give the name of his parents. It now costs $27 for a copy, and in my experience it will take 3 weeks to 3 months for it to arrive. For details on how to do this, see the Rootsweb on-line Social Security Death index at:
http://ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgihttp://ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi
Type in your father's name, search, and then go to the link for his SS-5 letter.
Another alternative is to obtain your father death certificate, presumedly from the state of Iowa.
Good Luck!Let me know what you find.
