My grandfather was Ernest Albert Smye, b. October 1878, Tuddenham, Suffolk. His story was that he left home when he was 12 years old to go and work on an estate in Yorkshire as a "gardener's lad". On the 1881 census the family is listed as living on Tuddenham Street, Tuddenham St. Martin. The family: Benjamin Smye, head, Ag. Lab. age 30, b. Tuddenham Ellen S. Smye, wife, age 28, b. Playford Alfred B. Smye, son, age 7, b. Playford Ernest A. Smye, son, age 2, b. Tuddenham Percy L. Smye, son, b. Tuddenham There were also other children born after 1881: Arthur, emigrated to Canada Ben - Benjamin? - possibly Alfred B. noted above. George Grace Nellie - possibly Ellen, called Nellie to destinguish her from her mother. Maybe there is some connection. Talking about connections - I know from the 1881 census there were Mann families in Tuddenham at that time. Does anyone know of any marriages between the Smy(e) and Mann families? John L.
