Hi, Donna,
I am also working on the Sneads of Lunenburg.I have the will of Samuel Snead written 4/10/1812, which lists his children. However, I have some different spouses than you based on a deed, Deed Book 19, p. 82, dated April 8, 1802 between Philip Snead and Anne his wife, John Snead and Jane his wife, Archibald Snead and Judith his wife, Samuel Snead and Patsy (?) his wife, William Snead and Sarah his wife, Isham Hardy and Polley his wife,Joseph Bohannon, Jr. and Patty his wife and Richard Wilkes.Richard Wilkes is the second party and not one of the children.
As to John Snead and Jane, there is a deed in Deed Book 28, p. 168:John Knight and Jane Snead "having received a certain sum of money by law as allimony for Jane Snead, from John Snead her husband in the state of Tennessee."John Eubank appointed power of attorney for John Knight and Jane Snead. Sept. 2, 1828.Signed:John Knight, next friend, and Jane Snead. This would certainly lead one to believe that Jane and John were divorced. You have his wife as Martha Clay.I believe that his mother was Martha Clay, as I will show by a later deed.
William Snead married Sally Stone, daughter of Richard and Mary Stone, and sister to Ann Stone, who married Philip Snead. She is named daughter in the will of Mary Stone, W.B. 6, pp. 148-149.This William Snead's will is in W.B. 14, p. 144, W.W. April 17, 1843, Entered in court Dec. 9, 1862.He names his brother Phillip Snead and sister Nancy Winn's children, with her maintenance first, not subject to any debts by Thomas Winn.Exec. Peter W. Street. From this is would appear that his wife was not living, nor did he have any living children.
The confusion is compounded by the fact that there is another William Snead living in the county at the same time, and two other Sarah (Sally) Sneads.Samuel and Martha have a daughter named Sarah, as shown by Lunenburg Order Book 26, p. 382:John Snead, Philip Snead, Sarah Snead, and Thomas Winn and Nancy his wife, children of Patty Snead (Patty was a common nickname for Martha) against Patty Snead, widow and relict of Sam'l Snead decd. and William Snead in his individual capacity and as administrator with the will annexed of Samuel Snead deceased.
The other Sarah Snead was the daughter of Minor Wilkes. In most records, she is referred to as Sally A. or Sarah A. (at some point the A. shows up standing for Ann). I believe that she married a William Snead, although I do not have definite proof. There is an inventory and appraisement of the estate of the late Wm. Snead deceased Mar. 3, 1812, by Edmd. P. _____(unreadable),
Edmd. Winn; and Pr. Jones, Jr.Just this week I traced the Land Tax Books for Lunenburg. In 1811, Sally A. Snead received 100 acres transferred from Minor Wilkes.By 1813, she had sold 50 and kept 50 acres. She held this property in her own name until her death. On May 1, 1818, she married Edmund Winn. She was not the mother of his children, but is named in various deeds from that point on relinquishing dower rights as he makes gifts to his children. She is still living in the Census of 1850, age given as 80, meaning a birthdate of probably 1770.This would mean that her mother was not Susanna Hazlewood, whom Minor Wilkes married on 5 May 1786, but she must have been born by an earlier marriage.
The will of Sally A. Winn was in W.B. 13, p. 404, W.W. May 29, 1850, W.P. Aug. 12, 1850, in which she names her son William Snead and Susan his wife and her son John Snead. In D.B. 37, p. 13, March 8, 1856: Whereas Sally A. Winn had left by her will property to "her son Wm. Snead and Susan his wife", which was held by them and then to be given to their children, all enter into a deed to sell the property to Lucy Edmonds:Wm. Snead and Susan his wife, James J. Snead and Eliza A., his wife, Edmund H. Snead and J(?) S. Snead his wife, William E. Winn and Ann his wife, Wm. A. Snead, Martha J. Snead, John W. Snead and Mary S. Snead.Signed: Sally Ann Winn, Jane S. Snead
Samuel and Martha (Patty)Snead's daughter Ann (Nancy) married Thomas Winn on 17 Aug. 1809.That this is the correct Ann Snead is shown by the deed in the Lunenburg Order Book cited above. They are also named as the parents of William Edward Winn, born ca. 1828 on his marriage records.Thomas Winn served as the bondsman for the following marriages:Sally Ann Winn to William T. Dalton on 17 Dec. 1828; and Sophia A. Winn to Everett Green on 26 Dec. 1836; suggesting a possible relationship, perhaps daughters although I have not persued this connection.
As to Samuel Snead's wife, there is a deed in D.B. 28, p. 352, dated May 4, 1829:Sally Snead received $200 from John Snead, Jr. "interest in slaves" of Charles Clay to Patty Snead for life and to her children after her death. The slaves had been retained by Eatty(?) Snead. Witnessed by Edmund Winn, William White, and Elisha Hardy. In the will of Charles Clay, he names his granddaughter Martha Clay. She would, of course, have been married by this time and legally been Martha (Patty) Snead. The fact that her daughter Sally did receive the interest in the slaves does, however, indicate that she is the granddaughter of Charles Clay.It is uncertain whose daughter she was at this point.Charles names sons James and Daniel and daughters Jincy Crowder and Salley Clay, grandchildren William, James, and Martha Clay. Then residue of estate, without relationships, goes to Charles Clay, Mastin Clay, Daniel Clay, James Clay, Salley Clay, Eliza Clardy, Martha Cole, and Fanney Pattillo.
I hope this information will be useful to you or someone else using this forum.
