John Snyder is my most elusive ancestor. He is my 3rd great-grandfather. I know from his tombstone in Willburn Cemetery in Ft. Worth Texas that he was born in 1820 and died in 1882.

I know from the 1880 census, when he was living in Ft. Worth, that he was born in Virginia to parents who were both born in Virginia. I know that he migrated to Texas during the late 1840s, and that he married Rachael Marinda WILBURN, daughter of Edward a.k.a. Ned and Nancy OVERTON Wilburn of Missouri. (The Wilburn or Willburn, Overton, and Snyder families migrated during the Peters Colony settlement. The Wilburns came from Kentucky through Missouri, and the Overtons had been in Tennessee before they were in Missouri.) Another related family was BURKE.

From a 1920s Ft. Worth Star Telegram article about the first one hundred families of Tarrant County, I know that John and Rachael Marinda Snyder had the following children:

Edward W. "Ned" Snyder b. 1855 - married Ida BENBROOK, was a physician in Brownwood, TX. They had the following children: Edward J, a physician in Brownwood, John, Frances, and Beth.

Sarah Elizabeth "Betty" Snyder (1856-1956) my 2nd great-grandmother, married Rev. Thomas R. PIERCE (1852-1909). They had seven children: Mary Florence, Georgia Frances, Tom, Jr., and Claudia, who lived in Bowie; Julia Foster and Augusta Wilburn, both teachers in Dallas; and Edward Lovick, who married Clive Chism and lived in Oklahoma.

Nancy "Nannie" F. Snyder b. 1861 - married Miles C. WELLS and lived in Benbrook. They had four children: Miles, Jr. who lived in Paducah, Texas; Tullis, who lived in Ft. Worth; Ada, a teacher in Bowie, Texas; and Frankie, who died (sometime prior to the 1920s newspaper article.)

John William Snyder b. 1864 - married Alice HOLT, lived in Childress, TX. They had no children.

Anna M. Snyder b. 1872 - married James J. JOHNSON. They had six children: Marinda, Elsie, Willie, Edward, Dorothy and John Calvin.

The newspaper story says that Mrs. Marinda Snyder donated the land for the first school, church and cemetery in Benbrook, now a suburb of Ft. Worth, Texas.

This summer, I visited the Willburn Cemetery in Benbrook. It is in southwest Ft. Worth, surrounded by the Ridgelea Country Club Estates neighborhood.

I would be ecstatic to hear from anyone who connects to any of these families. Meanwhile, I will keep hunting for my Virginia ancestors, the parents of John Snyder.

Regards,

Walker Pierce
Austin, Texas
