George W. Snyder, of Lansdowne, a retired bank loan officer and decorated World War ll veteran, died at Little Flower Manor in Darby of complications from surgery on Tuesday, the day after his 99th birthday. Mr. Snyder, son of John P. (Pfeiffenschneider) Snyder and Mary Louisa Sheppard Snyder, grew up in West Philadelphia. At 16, he went to work at Fidelity Bank in Philadelphia. Fidelity gave him free lunches and $50 a month and sent him to banking school, his niece June Bailey said. During World War ll, he served in the Army as a radio operator with the 29th Infantry Division. The division participated in the D-Day invasion in June 1944, liberated the town of St.-Lo in France in July, and then for the next year fought across Europe to the Elbe River in Germany. Mr. Snyder was wounded in combat and received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star for valor. After his discharge, he returned to Fidelity Bank. He retired as loan officer in 1972. For 70 years, Mr. Snyder was an active parishioner at St. Philomena Church in Lansdowne. Wntil becoming ill three months ago, his niece Mary Lou Marchesano said, he walked a mile from his home to the church every day to be an altar server at the 8 a.m. Mass. Mr. Snyder is survived by a sister, Florence Byrom; four nieces, and two nephews. His first wife, Ida Hopkins Snyder, to whom he was married for 20 years, and his second wife, Catherine Geoghegan Snyder, to whom he was married for 50 years, died earlier. A Funeral Mass will be said at 10 a.m tomorrow at St. Philomena Church, 41 E. Baltimore Ave., Lansdowne. Friends may call from 8:30 to 8:30 a.m. at Doyle-Stonelake Funeral Home, 85 E.
