William Sooy Smith was my grandfather's Great Uncle. I guess that makes him my gr gr gr uncle. He did die in Medford Or, I think in 1913. He is buried in a Chicago suburb (I can get some info on that) The West Point alums put a marker on his grave back in the 60's or 70's. My grandfather moved from Washington Court House Ohio to Chicago when he was 17 to work for W S Smith as a surveyor/civil engineer. W S Smith was building the foundation for the Chicago post office, a noteworthy project, since railroad tracks passed beneath the building. Smith was credited with many advancements in foundation designs which enabled the construction of todays skyscrapers. He was married and had a child. I have read letters from Chicago (1886) & Medford 1913. He was a very learned and proud man, and had a great sense of humor. The family knew him as Uncle Will.
