I am by no means an expert but back in South New Jersery there is a headstone for one "Yoos Sooy" 16?? - 17??. He is the father of a Nicolas, Joost Jr. and Luke Sooy. Luke is believed to have died as a child. So if you are a Sooy you are either a "N" (Nicolas decendant) or "J" (Joost Jr. Decendant). I am a "J" Sooy. Now, there are questions as to the authenticity of Yoos' name. My understanding is it may have been Yoost (basically Smith in Dutch). Also, it is odd that his last name is a mirror image of his first. There is a book called Jersey Genesis that covers him in the region. This is as far back as we can trace our paternal lineage. I would love to trace him back to Holland and you story sounds like a lead worth following. Perhaps Yoos was his last name and you are related. Feel free to email me directly @ as I don't check this post too often.
