My grandmother copies this from the book
Sooy Family History in the Woodbury Historical Society in New Jersey

"Our opening scene in the History of our Family is in the Old Dutch Colony of New Amsterdam. (this talks about Sarah Van Tienhoven's granfather Claes Claseen Bording)

further down
1. Joost Sooy was born in Holland probably of Franch parnets in April 1685 and came to American about 1705. He was a mariner-merchant and carried on the work started by the Dutch West India Trading Company, and his name is mentioned many times in the records of the Old Dutch Reformed Church in New York of which he was a member.

His tombstone in Lower Bank, Burlington co states: Hyre Lyes the body of Yoost Sooy interred Sept. 28, 1737 aged 51 years 5 months-- days, etc."

I am fairly positive that he was a french hugenot (I can't spell) and he went to Holland with his family.

Also note that anyone who moved to the area usually took on the Dutch naming practices.

Joost Sooy was most likely named after his father. All children would use the patrinomics. He normally would have been Yoost Yoosson, or something similar. When he got here he probably didn't like being called Yoos Yoosson or something like that so he changed it around to Yoost (Joost) Sooy.

I don't know this for sure but it seems very plausible.

Also I spoke with another Sooy cousin who has done some research and claims that Joost and Sarah had 5 children. Two Joost (1st died young) a Nicholas a Luke and a daugther. He claimed that two of the children were born in New Jersey.

By the way, I decsend from Joost Sooy Jr
