Hi Mike,
Just posting a quick message to see if maybe we're trying to find the same ancestors.
Not me, but a distant cousin from another of our branch has been searching for ancestors in our family tree for at least 30 years. I'm only trying to help her. The following is her information.
We are trying to find Jean Henri Sulin / Sullin / Soulie / Soulier, who's my 5G grandfather. My dad told me we came from The Elzas/Alsace, in North-East France, near the Swiss/German border. So we're taking up on that lead for now.
Anyway, Jean Henri moved from France to The Netherlands, where he married and had 9 children, and reported his trade to be a blacksmith. That's when she [my 'cousin'] found his marriage certificate and all kids' names and took it from there.
All 9 children's birth and baptise documents contained different spelling of our surname. It really was a matter of who wrote the names and interpreted the name in different spelling each time. Also, if Jean Henri had a French accent, the Dutch clerk might have misunderstood the proper spelling. etc. etc.
I'll give you a few variations of names that occured in our tree : Souilljee,Souillier, Souilliere, Souillië, Soulie, Soullie, Soullier, Soulier, Soullen, Sullin, Sulin, Soillin, Sulieen, Solien, Sulijën, Jeulien, Julieu
Let me know if you think we can help eachother with finding the right ancestor. We might find someone not related to us, but instead to you, and visa versa. There's lots of Soulier names in france. Some are in Southern France near Marseille, but not related to us as far as the search for Jean Henri goes. Always a chance he might be 'the missing link'. ;-)
Also a request to anyone with any info regarding my family : I'll post another message soon on a new thread. Please contact me via there. With thanks
Take care,
Anne Souilljee
