David: You are quite well informed as to the South family. Would you mind commenting upon a point made by Christine South Gee in her book. On page 28 she gives a Mrs. William Shattuck Sampson as the source for her assertion that the brothers William (b. 1762) and James South (1763)who died in Clermont County, Ohio were both sons of Benjamin South (b. 1740) of Middlesex County, New Jersey. I know that the above is disputed as reflected in previous messages and do not wish to rehash that debate here. What is of interest to me is that on page 28 CSG reports on Mrs. Sampson's lineage back to James South. Mrs. Sampson identifies her mother as Helen Elizabeth South (1845-1915)and her grandfather as Stephen Benton South (1819-1885)and her great-grandfather as William South (b. 1784)and finally back to James South (b. 1763). From your research have you been able to confirm Mrs. Sampson's lineage back to James South? Was her mother the daughter of Stephen Benton South? Thanks.
