I am probably descended from John South. I have just recently started looking into the South side of my family tree. I grew up in Blount County, AL. My grandfather was Womack Loyd South from Blountsville. His parents were Demp Duncan South and Gussie Loyd. Demp's father was R.R. South. I haven't been able to find time to track down what R. R. stood for, but the whole family came from the same homestead near Blountsville, next to current location of South Cemetary. I know that John South owned this property around the time of the Civil War, so without actually connecting all the dots yet, I do believe based on family evidence that I am descended from John. I plan on eventually connecting them all.
