In trying to trace my South family, I have been unable to verify the parents of my great grandmother. She was Mary Frances (Fannie) South b. 6 Aug 1865, married Isaac Porter Nolen in Fayette Co., AL 22 Oct 1882. Her mother was Caroline (last name unknown)b. 23 Oct 1840 and d. 14 Oct 1900. Caroline is buried at Sadler Cemetery, Jefferson Co., AL. Fannie's death certificate lists her father as Henry South but I have not been able to tie him to any of the Fayette Co. Souths although I believe he is a part of one of those families. He was born about 1838 and there is a Henry J. South listed in the 5th Battalion of Hilliard's Legion, later the 10th Calvary during the Civil War. I don't know what happened to him but Caroline was listed on 1880 census as a widow living next door to Ezekiel South and R.H. Humber families. There was a Henry South listed as a prisoner of war that was paroled in Shreveport, LA on June 7, 1865. Any help on maiden name of Caroline or what family Henry (J) belongs to would be so very welcome.
