I have an Elijah South who sounds similar to yours - the following is quoted from a copy of the South Family History compiled by family members:
"Elijah was born in 1743 and died in 1832. His wife Elizabeth was born in 1747 and died in 1832. Elijah and Elizabeth Southey came to what is now Alabama and settled in what is now Birmingham and they left off the E-Y and spelled the name South". They had several children, these being seven sons and some of these settled in Fayette and Tuscaloosa county. The sons were Ezekiel, John, Tilman, Joel, Levi, Samuel, and one other we feel is Delanson."

The history then details Delanson and his descendents. Hope this helps. If you can provide any other information, I would appreciate it.
