She was Native American. My grandmother has a picture of Catharine South (her grandmother) and Catharine's mother (if I remember the pic correctly, the mother is in full Indian garb). I am trying to get a copy of it, but she lives in VA. My mother is going down to see her next week, so she'll get the photo.
I'm going to include the census's I have in an email to you. According to the Census reports Catharine was born in VT.
