Hello Elaine,
I have links to the Birch area of Essex, with my g-g-grandfather William James South born 1825. He was a policeman in Barking by 1861.

I believe his parents were Daniel and Elizabeth South, but have yet to confirm this. I understand that there was much movement between villages at that time, and wonder if there could be any links to your Colchester Souths.
