I too had family in Miegs and Bradley Counties in east Tennessee during civil war? Three brothersenlisted in Hamilton County on November 11, 1861 at Sale Creek Tennessee in the 7th Tennessee Infantry "Unon" Army under Colonel Clift. After the Tennessee Govenor sent troops and broke the unit up a week later All took to the "HILLS" In December 11, 1861 they were captured after hiding out for months in the hills, and sent to Nashville where they were threatened with hanging unless they joined Confederate Army? They "joined" under threat of death in the 36 Confederate Infantry and later got away and joined units in the 5th and 8th Tennessee Infantry UNION in Kentucky. This after they had to make the dangerous treck on the "Underground Rail Road" which took in one case almost 4 months?
Two very good books on this era in East Tennessee that have helped me greatly are Volunteers for Union and Libery by Robert K Cannon, and Bradley Divided by Melba Lee Murry one time historical librarian in Cleveland Tennessee. These are both very good books and Bradley Divided is about the problems confronted during and after the war. As a note Melba confirmed for me in her book about family history from one of my ancestors James Romines.
My ancestors were "FORCED OUT" after the war and they all had to flee to Missouri and Kansas before they were destroyed by local families they had known and married into for 2 generations or more? I have much info and pension records on 2 members of family that after the war was over had to fight the Federal Govenment for a $10 pension, and in most cases never got for any length of time?
