Alton, Illinois

I'm trying to find information regarding the civilians who were taken to Alton during the Civil War to protect them, because their loved ones from the South had enlisted in the Union Army. My grandmother and her son were moved from Clarksville, Johnson County, Arkansas to Alton for this reason. I have her papers and my grandfather's papers from the Civil War. Any information on the civilians in Alton would be appreciated.
