Joseph Smith born MS

I’m trying to find out what happened to a someone who, according to one record, was taken into the 2nd Mississippi infantry company K, and was sent to Iuka(most likely where he lived) and “left to join the Yankees in the west”. His name is Joseph Smith and was “drafted” in 1862. In a notice about his mother given years later the notice states that Joseph died in 1863, but it doesn’t say how or where. He is not listed as buried in any of the cemeteries his family is buried in. My question is this: How would I find out if he actually did go to the Yankees and how and where he died?
