Lula,

I see you have been properly chastised for using the wrong forum, so I won't go into that :) However, knowing that you may still be looking for help, let me direct you to a couple of forums that are filled with experts on the subject of Civil War soldiers and their service:

http://history-sites.com/mb/cw/arcwmb/

http://history-sites.com/mb/cw/tncwmb/

These sites, the Arkansas in the Civil War Message Board and the Tennessee in the Civil War Message Board are regularly visited by some of the most knowledgeable folks I have run into when it comes to the Civil War. They may likely be able to help you out, and once you find your man you can order his military records directly through the message board. They are very helpful (much more so in my opinion than the National Archives) and will go the extra mile to make sure you get all the information, on the right person, that you are looking for.

By the way, I did a quick check and found a John and a William in the 8th Tennessee, but all the companies in that regiment were recruited from central Tennessee, so it's not likely that an Arkie would have gone that far to jine up. I hope you find your man!!

Rick
