Hello:
John Spain of Shelby Cty. Illinois was my great-great-great grandfather by his marriage to Martha Boyd Stuart Spain. They had only one child and she died of complications about 2-3 months later. Martha was his second wife. Afterwards, John probably went home to North Carolina and married Lucinda, his third. He was fiscally responsible for nearly 20 children. Martha was a widow with 4 children when she married John. Their only child John Harlan had a son Edgar Allan by his wife Martha Elizabeth Rhodes. Edgar married Lucy Estelline Tomlinson. Their third child was John Arlyn Spain-my grandfather.
We do have a large family tree put together by my cousin Harold Spain in Washington D.C.
When John-aka Uncle Jacky-died he was listed as the oldest postmaster in the nation. He had his photograph taken and published by the St. Louis Globe Democrat (a Republican paper) and was very upset; as he was a staunch Democrat.
After John's death, his children left Illinois and went to Arkansas and Oklahoma. Nearly one third of the state seems to be Spains!
I know this isn't quite what you are looking for, but I'm sure in the family tree that Harold sent me is the information you're probably looking for.
Brenda (Spain)Gilmore
