Sounds like your grandfather must have been in the Navy during that time. Go to WWW.Spanamwar.com and you can find alot of information there on how to get records. As for the Lonely Hearts Club I think don't think it is what you would think of as a club. There were like articles in papers or magazines. People looking for pen pals or like in the papers today those single adds where peopl are looking to meet people. Hope this makes sense.
