Was was your Benedict's given name. My family has a story of a James Benedict "never coming back from the war". James was born about 1857 in Rock island County, Illinois to a Melinda Ayers/? Melinda married Cornelius Benedict about 1864 and James must have simply taken the Benedict name. James married a woman with up to six last names, Stone, Gray, Johnson, Huff, Benedict, and Hickie or Heki, and had a family in the Ottumwa/Oskaloosa, Iowa area.???? My aunt just always said that he never came back from the war. All discussion was taboo.
I have yet to know where Cornelius came from and went to and for certain where James came from and went to. I don't know if my aunt is confused, purposely confusing the issue, or WHAT!
I know that just studying the Benedicts movement west in the 1800's is an interesting experience. They seem to come from everyplace and go everywhere. The North's invasion of the South seems to have been a serious disruption to families.
Anyone in your family have a brown eye and blue eye combined? Ocassional deafness? Very early graying of hair? This is a result of a mutated gene that reappears in the Benedict line that I am looking for.
