Canadian soldier Robert Alexander May - how do I find info

My ancestor left Montreal as a teenager in the 1890's and was most likely in New York State or New Jersey when he enlisted.
He served in the Sp-Am War then headed back to Canada around 1900 with a wife.
Silly question but... is there any database that could help me track him down? I'm looking for military service records but I have no idea which unit he was with. Legend said he rode with Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders but I doubt that.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Melanie in Canada
